Are You Truly at Peace? — Rethinking ‘An-nyeong’
For anyone stepping into the world of Korean culture—whether through K-dramas, K-pop, or language learning—the very first word they encounter is almost always ‘안녕하세요’ (An-nyeong-ha-se-yo). We simply translate it as "Hello."
But if you look closer at its Chinese characters (安 An, 寧 Nyeong — Peace and Calm), it is far more than a casual greeting. It is a genuine question and a gentle wish:
"Are you at peace? I wish for your safety, wellness, and peace of mind."
Having moved to Canada after 16 years as an English teacher in Korea, this simple word has begun to resonate with me in a whole new, deeper way.
The Contrast of Two Worlds
Canada is a blessed land, endowed with vast nature and rich natural resources that give its life a steadier, gentler rhythm.
Korea, on the other hand, is a small peninsula with few natural resources. To survive and thrive on the global stage, Korea had only one resource to rely on: its people.
Whenever I drive down Canadian roads and spot Hyundai or Kia cars passing by, or see Samsung and LG appliances in local stores, a wave of complex emotions washes over me—a deep mixed feeling.
On one hand, I feel an immense sense of pride. How remarkable it is for a tiny nation to produce world-class technology that powers everyday life across the globe! But on the other hand, my heart aches. I know what lies behind those sleek cars and brilliant screens: relentless competition, endless sleepless nights, and the intense hustle of so many people.
To rise from a war-torn nation and create those miracles, our society had to run at a breakneck pace.
Asking Korea: Are You Truly at Peace?
For the first time in our history, we have achieved a level of prosperity where we no longer need to worry about basic safety or survival. Standing a step back, I see Korea in a new light.
Looking at that dazzling skyline from afar, I find myself wanting to ask my homeland this quiet question:
"Are you truly at peace? Is the Korean heart genuinely '안녕'?"
Behind all this success, did we somehow lose our inner calm? We ask each other "Are you at peace?" every day, yet we live in one of the most intensely competitive societies in the world.
As I begin this new chapter in Canada learning to slow down, my heart goes out to everyone striving so hard back home—a path I know all too well.
To everyone running so hard today—may you find a moment of true calm and rest in your busy day.
