Why I Named My Journey "bud&bird"

In my previous post, I shared why I decided to step out of my comfort zone after 16 years as an English teacher and start a new chapter in Canada. Today, I’d like to share the story behind the name of this space: bud&bird.

In my very first YouTube video, I introduced a Korean word that holds a special place in my heart—새 [sae].

What makes this simple, single-syllable word so fascinating is that it carries two completely different, yet beautiful meanings:

1. ‘Sae’ Means "New"

  • 새싹 (Sae-Ssak): A new bud in spring.

  • 새해 (Sae-Hae): The New Year we celebrate every year.

2. ‘Sae’ Means "Bird"

  • 새집 (Sae-Jip): A birdhouse.

  • 새장 (Sae-Jang): A birdcage.

  • 참새 (Cham-Sae) & 앵무새 (Aeng-Mu-Sae): Sparrow and Parrot.

(Fun fact: 새집 [Sae-Jip] can mean both a "birdhouse" and a "new house" depending on the context!)

While many Korean words originate from Chinese characters, '새' is a pure, native Korean word. It brings warmth, simplicity, and a sense of life to the language.


Why "bud&bird"?

This channel and blog, bud&bird, embrace both meanings of this word:

  • Bud (새싹): Symbolizing new beginnings, growth, and the courage to start again.

  • Bird (새): Symbolizing freedom, flight, and connecting with the broader world.


At 44, after stepping away from the test-driven classroom, I am becoming a "bud" once again—learning with a fresh perspective and growing alongside my family here in Canada.
